Western Singapore

The attractions grouped in this section are on the west side of Singapore, beginning from the Singapore Botanic Gardens at the edge of the urban area all the way out to the Singapore Discovery Centre past Jurong. Transportation can be problematic in this part of the island; as the MRT system rarely goes directly to any of the main sights, taxis can be hard to find, and bus routes get more complex. Keep the telephone number for taxi booking handy. Sometimes ticket sales people at each attraction can help and make the call for you.

Eastern Singapore

Eastern Singapore is home to Changi International Airport, nearby Changi Prison, and the long stretch of East Coast Park along the shoreline. The MRT heads east in this region, but swerves northward at the end of the line. A popular bus line for east coast attractions not reached by MRT is bus no. 2, which takes you to Changi Prison, Changi Point, Malay Village, and East Coast Park. Despite the massive upheavals that have ruptured the communities of the east coast, parts of it, including the suburbs of Geylang and Katong, have managed to retain a strong Malay identity.

Little India

Little India is, as the name promises, the center for the large Indian community in Singapore. The first Indian settlers in Singapore arrived with Sir Stamford Raffles as assistants and soldiers back in 1819. In the late 19th century, many more Indian immigrants arrived to find work, be it as labourers to build roads or to take up key positions in the civil service. The North-East MRT line’s Little India and Farrer Park stations, near Serangoon Road, are convenient entry points into the area. Bugis station on the East-West line is also within walking distance. Today, Little India is the focal point of Singapore’s Indian community. Common items include brass and silverware, jewelry, wood items, and traditional clothing like saris and Punjabi suits. Fabric is also common. But unlike Arab Street, Little India and the surrounding area plays host to a number of mall-styled shopping venues. The Mustafa Centre, Sim Lim Square, and Tekka Mall are the most popular. Little India is packed with interesting things to discover. During Deepavali (usually between Oct/Nov), the Indian Festival of Lights, Little India is transformed into a fairyland of gaily decorated, brightly lit streets bustling with shoppers.

Central Business District

The Central Business District in Singapore is located in the Central Region of the Southern part of Singapore. It was names as Commercial Square (later renamed Raffles Place) which was the colony’s busiest business address, boasting the banks, ship’s chandlers and warehouses of a burgeoning trading port. The square now forms the nucleus of the CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT the commercial heart of the state, home to many of its banks and financial institutions. The Singapore River flows through the Central Business District in Singapore and the mouth of the river was a very important point from where trading activities were carried on in olden times. The Central Business District in Singapore consists of eleven planning area, which are Downtown Core, Museum, Orchard, Newton, Outram, River Valley, Rochor, Marina East, Marina South, Straits View and Singapore River. The Government of Singapore and the Urban Redevelopment Authority have expanded the Central Area from the 1970s to the present by land reclamation of portions of Marina Bay. Newly created portions of land surrounding Marina Bay have been organised and labelled into Marina East, Marina South, Straits View, with their own separate plans. The development of the reclaimed land surrounding Marina Bay, such as the construction of infrastructure, was similar to that of Jurong and Jurong Island, with the exception to use the land for commercial purposes. Many construction projects have been completed on the reclaimed lands since their creation, but much of it is still under consolidation or development.

The area tends to be more densely packed than other parts of Singapore, and a great number of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations tend to be concentrated in this area, especially interchange stations and stations along the Circle MRT Line.

Chinatown

Chinatown once constituted the focapoint of Chinese life and culture in Singapore. Chinatown is located within the larger district of Outram. As the largest ethnic group in Singapore is Chinese, composing approximately 75% of the population, Chinatown is considerably less of an enclave than it once was. Chinatown has a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station, called the Chinatown MRT Station, in the middle of Pagoda Street (which is closed to traffic) and services the vicinity, as well as several public bus routes which integrate it into the Singapore’s transportation system. Not all parts of Chinatown are Chinese though. The Al Abrar Mosque along Telok Ayer Street, and the Jamae Mosque and Sri Mariamman Temple along South Bridge Road lay witness to the harmonious racial and religious atmosphere in Singapore. Chinatown can be divided into four main districts - Kreta Ayer, Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Pasoh - each with its own distinctive flavour. The heart of activity is in the Trengganu / Smith Streets area.

Orchard Road

Orchard Road is synonymous with shopping - indeed, tourist brochures refer to it as the “Fifth Avenue. the Regent Street, the Champs Elysees, the Via Veneto and the Ginza of Singapore“. The road runs northwest from Fort Canning Hill and is served by three MRT stations: Orchard, Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut, of which Orchard is the most convenient for shopping expeditions. North of the Singapore River, to the west of the Central Business District, Orchard Road turns into Bras Basah Road as it heads east. Orchard Rd is walkable, at least allowing plenty of breaks in air-conditioned shopping centers. It is regularly frequented by the local population as well as being a major tourist attraction. Often the surrounding area is known simply as Orchard.

Colonial District

Colonial District, the Heritage District is the area between Orchard Road on the west and Financial District (aka Central Business District) to the east. The heart of the Colonial District is the immaculately groomed grass of the Padang (”field” in Malay), which stretches out below St Andrew’s Cathedral towards the river. To the south of the Padang are the Empress Place Building (now home to the Asian Civilizations Museum), Old Parliament House and the Singapore Cricket Club - the epitome of the colonizers’ stubborn refusal to adapt to their surroundings. To the north is grand old Raffles Hotel, beyond which a string of nineteenth- and twentieth-century churches leads to Singapore’s once famous entertainment centre, Bugis Village. Also in the north of the district are the Singapore Art Museum, National History Museum, and the shops and restaurants of the CHIJMES complex. Heading west from the Padang, you pass City Hall, the former Supreme Court and its new, Norman Foster-architected replacement, before climbing the slopes of Fort fanning Hill, ten minutes’ walk from the Padang, and one of the few hills in Singapore not lost to land reclamation. Dominating the newly reclaimed land he cist of the Padang, the bug’s-eye beauty of the Theatres on the Bay project hauls the Colonial District into the twenty-first century.
